Lacy White Jr., 42, of Windsor died in a sin gle-vehicle accident last week. According to N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper C.W Godwin, the accident happened at approximately 12:16 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7. White was driving an 18-wheeler operated by Ward Farms, and was traveling south on U.S. 17 when he ran off the road to the right and hit a tree. “The truck then jack knifed and caught fire,” said Trooper Godwin. The Merry Hill-Mid way Fire Department, the Windsor Fire De partment and Bertie County Emergency Ser vices responded to the accident. The southbound lane of U.S. 17 was detoured for several hours. According to Trooper Godwin, the investigat ing officer, the accident is still under investiga tion. He said speed does not appear to have been a factor. The Bertie County Arts Council, along with the Windsor/Bertie Cham ber of Commerce and the Roanoke Cashie River Center, hosted the “Windsor Holiday Extravaganza” re cently. The first-time event was held last week (Dec. 4) at the Roanoke/Cashie River Centeir, and included events for all ages. Participants could begin at the Bertie County Arts Council and take a horse and carriage rides through the town to see the Christmas lights before being dropped off at the river center.
